New Travels in the United States of America, 1788.
Jacques-Pierre Brissot de Warville.
“We have no need to learn from Americans how to attain the blessing of liberty,” the Frenchman Brissot wrote, “but we have to learn from them the secret of preserving it.” Setting out in 1788 to explore investment opportunities, Brissot traveled from New Hampshire to Virginia investigating prisons, almshouses, farms, public debt, foreign trade—almost every significant aspect of American society, including, in particular, Quakerism and the antislavery movement. His report was only partly translated by Joel Barlow in 1792 and has never been fully available in English.
